I'll be in the Philly area this week (staying in town near Penn) and would like to visit some shops while in town. I'm staying downtown, but I have a car and some free time Wednesday afternoon. Are there any good music shops (ideally ones that cater to acoustic players, or at least with a good selection of mandolins) in the greater Philly area?

Yes, there are a few-- some closer than others:

Vintage Instruments, at 16th (?) & Pine is a must-do. Lots and lots of cool vintage instruments, including a great selection of old Gibson ovals. Call ahead, as they can keep odd hours.

DiPinto Guitars (Northern Liberties) and Bluebond Guitars (South Street area)are not necessarily great mandolin stores, but they both have a rummage sale kind of feel with oddball instruments. Lots of fun.

Acoustic Roots is part of Medley Music in Bryn Mawr. Decent selection of mostly new high-end instruments, including several Collings mandolins.

Bucks County Folk Music is kind of a haul from the city, but worth it, as it is one of the few dedicated acoustic music shops in the area.

Todaro's Music is Lansdowne is not that far from where you're going to be-- lots of acoustic instruments, but with a world music field (lots of south american instruments and percussion).

Drop me an email if you want more info-- happy to chat about what's going on in the area.

Here's more detailed info for Vintage Instruments... this is closest to where you'll be staying...and will probably have more mandos than the others... although they will all be vintage... lots of old Gibsons and Martins and various bowls. #Definitely call first... they don't always actively staff both locations for walk-in business... but if they know you're coming, they'll arrange to be there with you.

After that, I'd say Todaro's. Especially if you're interested in bowlbacks. Joe Todaro has been involved with mandolin orchestra, and has a bowlback that he is having produced for him to sell, with a one-piece carved bowl. I haven't gotten there myself, but it's intriguing. He also carries Weber mandolins. Also... fretted stringed instruments from many other places. here's a link: link

Definitely check out Vintage Instruments, it's easy to reach via public transit from university city. There are lots of great places for lunch around there too, it's a great way to spend an afternoon. make sure that you call ahead and let them know that you are coming. Here is their website.
