Moving to the Panhandle of Texas

Howdy, I am just over two weeks away from moving to Wellington, Texas. I am curious if anyone knows of any bluegrass jams in the area or even some that might be in the panhandle. I can't drive several hours every week just to play, but I would be willing to do so occassionally.

I don't know about the jam sessions in the area. There should be something in Amarillo or Lubbock, but I would live close enough to drive to Levelland to see Joe Carr and Alan Munde.

Denny, I don't know of any, but I'm sure you'll find some. I grew up in Tulia, and in the 80's I was in a Friday night jam with some fiddle players. One old guy (I can't remember his name now) played every instrument that anybody would bring - and play it well. He had been in the Texas Playboys for a while. He had Parkinson's disease when I knew him. Sometimes the tremors would prevent him from playing, but other times he'd be right in there as good as ever.

If you can't find a hardcore bluegrass jam, you'll likely find some folks to play fiddle tunes and Western Swing with. You'll be mighty close to Turkey, TX after all.

I think they just had a bluegrass festival in Tulia this weekend, BTW. I'm not sure how often they have one.

I found some regular jams in Amarillo, but they only last an hour. That would be four hours on the road for an hour jam. I guess I'll have to plan grocery shopping and so forth in order to go and play. I will look more when I get there.
