Does anyone have an idea as to the origins of the verzi blocks. I here them mentioned randomly and have seen them a couple of times on the internet. For instance - Dudenbostel and written description of a 1923 Gibson A model. If anyone know of a thread or link that discusses this let me know. I couldn't find much via search engine.
    Thanks, Rob

They were used in violins at one time. They were attached to the bass bar, and because of the added weight, the sound was diminished. They acted like a damper, and eventially fell out of favor. Apparently Mr. Loar favored them in his mandolins. The Virzi must have worked better in the mando, as Mr Loar certainly knew his business!! If you Google "Virzi tone producer" you should get some info.

That may be because you have the wrong spelling. It's "Virzi", and if you put this word into the search on the Cafe, you'll get loads of hits (make sure you search in "all forums" and "from the beginning"). The topic has been discussed in great detail many times.

    Martin,

Check my previous post for spellling. I think you've got a tuner loose! I had already searched as you suggested. There aren't in fact numerous posts on this subject. There are a couple of posts with links to Siminoff, which does not go into great detail about the "Verzi" block being used in mandolins.

    Rob, I'm confused.

The correct spelling is vIrzi as Martin rightly points out. You are spelling it vErzi, which is why you're not finding much.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by 'block' since really the virzi is more like a plate...

Anyway, a search for virzi (restricted to titles) will bring you the following results.

    Hope this helps

    Germain

I stand corrected. I guess I just didn't like his tone.
