All of us who do covers--and I'm guessing that's about 90 percent of us--are Pickin' on somebody....

That cover of Maggie's Farm just shows that it can be done. Not that it should be, or needs to be done. To me anyway, it doesn't come anywhere near to conveying the emotion of the original. Just my 2 centavos.

    Why do you say that?

Elsewhere on UToob I saw Tim O'Brien doing a cover of John Hartford's "Gentle On My Mind" and one of the comments was that Tim really changed the mood of the song from John's "playfulness" to more of a lament.

...and that's what I like about covers! What's the point of just copying the original?

What I especially like about his cover of Maggie's Farm is that it sounds a bit "frantic" to me with the fiddle and banjo, almost old-timey, but in a powerhouse way. To me that really conveys a strong emotion to the song. Perfect in my book!

BTW - check out the version Dylan did at Newport in '65. Lotsa people revolted at his whole "plugged-in" thing, but I really dig that. ...and then there's the version by Rage Against The Machine!

    What about this one?

(...I wanted to put up the Retrograss version of Maggie's Farm, but it wasn't up on YouTube.)
