well, it's taken me a long time but I'm finally through Niles Hockkanen's 'Bluegrass Up the Neck." I'll still be going back to it and working to incorporate more of what I've learned in my breaks, but I'm ready to start on another book. At the intermediate level at least, that will help with improvising breaks, moving around the fretboard, and any other aspects of playing. Not a tune book, in other words.

Any advice? One possibility is Hokkanen's "The Pentatonic Mandolin". I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has used both books. And any other instruction book suggestions.

    Thanks.

Brad Laird's books, "Mandolin Master Class" and "Mandolin Training Camp" are excellent resources for beginning and intermediate/advanced improvisation. #Master Class starts with Pentatonic and Blues scales.

Lots of cool shortcuts and tricks to making this stuff easier. It's a little light on theory, but gives enough that you can research it elsewhere. This works fine for this book as it contains a lot of examples without a lot of confusing text.

Niles and Brads books are good also I got a lot out of Fretboard Roadmap for Mandolin. Learned a lot about moving around on the fretboard and playing up the neck.

Gotta do Niles other book! There is a lot of brains in there & it is presented so
normal folks can get a grasp on the subject & put it to use immediately.
