I'm looking for some fun, easy songs to play. I'm especially looking for tunes with lots of open strings/double stops/drones. I'm thinking along the lines of "Bile them Cabbage Down" with lots of nice open ringing strings along with the melody.

    Any ideas?

Most simple fiddle tunes in D or A will sound good with drones and/or lots of open strings. How about trying something like Little Rabbit or Arkansas Traveler? I'll also recommend Mike Compton's Muddy John which I'm having a lot of fun with right now.

    We're putting these three together:

Cattle in the Cane/Kitchen Girl/Pretty Little Dog

Pick any one of them, if you are looking for a fun tune. I think that all three are in the Fiddler's Fakebook, but we found some different versions.

I dropped Angeline the Baker down an octave in D. It's very, very simple with lots of open strings.

I'll agree with adgefan, most fiddle tunes in D and A really themselves to what you're looking for.

    gschmidt,
I googled Waterbound and found plenty of dulcimer and banjo tabs, but no mandolin tabs. I learned it from a fiddle player. A book that every old time musician should have is The Fiddlers' Fakebook. I'm sure that Waterbound is in there. If you don't read standard notation there's a Mandolin Players' Fakebook with many of the same tunes.

I like "Wildwood Flower" in D or "Flop-Eared Mule". Those are songs we use to loosen up.

"Waterbound" is also known as "Stay All Night." You might find tab under that name. Another easy tune that is very similar is "Sourwood Mountain."

Sultans of the Swing is a good one, especially if you have a mandocaster for the solo.

How about Norwegian Wood in the key of D. Or Banks of the Ohio, also in D. Lots of drone potential in both.

Been tinkering with Saint Anne's Reel and there are many, many spots where you can use doublestops and drones.

Also as someone said, Ashoken Farewell in D you can find a lot of places to add double spots.
