Necks.

I have an older? Kentucky KM1000 (Japan, 1990). #And I was wondering how the neck on this instrument compares with other mandolins, especially Collings MT or Gibson A9. #

In general, what are the different available neck widths, depths, shapes on bluegrass mandolins? And I know this is very subjective, but what do players prefer (f/ bluegrass). #I have short, stubby fingers if that matters (it does on guitar, I prefer a little extra space @ 1 3/4" neck at the nut).

Tom,
I had an older KM1000, the neck was too big for my comfort level. I have an F5G and had an A9. Both model Gibsons have smaller neck profiles than the Kentucky. If the KM1000 would have had the smaller profile, I believe I would have kept it.

I tried one time to find out what neck widths are the best for me. What i found out is that even with the same widths at the nut, the neck sizes vary all over the place because of the shapes and thickness etc. It's very hard to say one size width is correct without trying them first.

Tom, don't worry much about what other pickers prefer, it is YOU that needs to feel right and get around on this neck. Remember that everyone is a bit different from everyone else.
