This question's been asked more than once but I've yet to see a thorough response. How does one accurately date a Flatiron mandolin with a serial number?

As I understand it, there are at least 2 numbering systems (pre and post-gibson) but there may be as many as 3 (pre-gibson, montana gibson, nashville gibson).

    Can anybody help?

    Thanks,
    Andrew

An early Flatiron mandolin had the last two years of the manufacture date as the first two digits of the serial number. I think it was after Gibson's purchase that they went to the current numbering system, best understood by example: A 1997 Flatiron/Gibson serial number would be 7xxxxxxxx9 (I'm not too sure right now how many "x's" there'd be. . . .
