The mandolin bridges I've seen seem to run about 4 and 1/2 inches wide. Has anyone experiemented with how shorter bridges, 4 inches or less, would affect the tone? It seems to me there would be more side to side rocking motion and the top would be freed up a little. I'm thinking primarily of oval hole mandolins here, although as long as you still had the end of the foot over the tone bar, it could be something to try on an f hole model too. I recently cut one of mine back to just a hair over 4 inches and feel that the volume and bass response opened up, but I also went from a solid bridge to a standard adjustable bridge as well so I can't say for sure what caused the change. Any ideas?

Red Henry did some comparative work on different length bridges. I don't know his website offhand, but you can do an internet search for it.
