I'm getting ready to place an order and I had some questions about binding. I'm going to try to do an F5 with top, back, fingerboard and headstock all bound in grained ivoroid. LMI only sells it in one size thats 1/4" tall and like 50" long. Do you just trim it down with a knife to do the board and head binding? How much (in inches) should I order to do the full F5 with some left over for if I mess up? Thanks.

LMI also sells soundhole binding. Can you use the regular binding on the soundholes (approprately trimmed)?

To bind the front and back of the body of an F5 takes 2 x 50" strips, the peghead takes less than half a strip, and the fingerboard takes about half. Most people usually bind their fingerboards in 0.040" thick and bind their bodies and pegheads in 0.060" thick, so you'd probably need to buy 3 x 0.060" strips and 1 x 0.040" to bind the complete instrument (assuming you don't have any nasty accidents with the heat gun!).

For the peghead binding you'll find the 1/4" is too wide. I usually cut mine down on a bandsaw with a fine blade.

3/16 is used for the body, if you get 1/4" razor and coping saw or bandsaw cuts it fine, you can cut your headstock binding down to size this wat too.
Or go HERE....> and get binding from Bill James
