Is Swing '42 by Reinhart and Grappelli just a 1-6-2-5 chord pattern with a 3 to minor 4 repetition in the bridge? Also, I think that the Grisman/Grappelli version is in the key of G while the original was in C. I wonder why they changed keys?

Usually it's played in C: 1-6/2-5/1-6/2-5/3-6/2-5/1-6/2-5 For the bridge it's 1-1/2-5/or 1-6/2-5 in the key of E with a Em7-A7/Dm7-G7 for the last two bars to get you back to the key of C. Great tune, good luck!
Think "circle of fifths" and it'll help ya through alot of the gypsy swing tunes, they're used extensively.

Around here, FOLKS often play a Bbm6 (or G half diminished) instead of the the 3 (Em7) in part A.

Tips for playing Jazz on the mandolin
Pete-- I wonder if you mean E half-dim. (or G minor 6). This would sound nice with a Bb bass falling to A in the next chord. I usually play Bb7 at this point, a slight variation on the same idea. BC

Thanks, Ted. #This version has the Bb in the chord at bar 5 (assuming we're in C). #At the end of the bridge, it has E major for a bar, then G7 for a bar, rather than the turnaround hotclub posted. #Either works, but I think the MP3 has Django's changes. #BC

Great web site for trying to improvise over Django/Swing
chords! I just blew my fingers out on a few others.
The Grisman/Rice version that I learned was in C not G. I think it was from the first Tone Poems project.
Fun song. My wife says it sounds like the theme song to a morning show.
Thanks for that website! I immediately ordered their CD. Seems like a great resource for jamming along and learning those gypsy standards. I'll review it when it comes.
