    My fantasy:

"My grandpa had this buddy named Lloyd who made mandolins for Gibson. Anyway, Lloyd gave Grandpa a couple of mandolins, which are up in my attic. I'll let you have 'em both for a thousand bucks."

    My nightmare:

But I don't have the thousand bucks. Something goes wrong at the bank and I can't get it. Of course he won't take a check.

I would like to find at least one "attic" Loar in my lifetime.

I actually knew someone who found a Stradivarius violin in the attic. Grandmother's friend's late husband was a violinist, and it was in the attic for 40 years. She was thrilled that her friend's grandaughter played it, because "it was supposed to be a pretty good violin." Granddaughter was more than thrilled to read the label and have it appraised. This was about 30 years ago that she found it.

Was it truly authenticated as a Stradivari? There are thousands of fairly old violins out there that are perfectly distressed copies of Strads and are accurate right down to the aged paper and ink for the forged label. Some of these are wonderful violins and worth a fair amount on their own merits, but the discovery of a new Stradivari (or Amati or any classic Cremona instrument) would have been newsworthy, indeed. Is it being played now?

I suspect the real story has to do with the date the day after tomorrow.

A friend of mine is a pastor west of Ft Worth. A member of his church brought him a guitar and wanted to know if it was any good. It was a 1933 00-42 Martin in pristine condition. It had belonged to his father and they found it in the back of his closet. It even had the 1933 Martin catalog. It makes you want to start looking in old closets.

I havn't looked at the "Loar picture of the day" thread yet, but what is with the rectangular fretboard inlays on the mentioned mandolin? I don't think that this was "stock". The ad mentions that it was refinished, but what else was done to it?

Sorry to talk violins on a great Mando thread. The Stradivarius was indeed authenticated as the real deal, and was quickly insured for a king's ransom. I was fortunate to play on it once or twice. It was awesome.

I was in a conversation today with a client, and mandolins came up, they always do with me around, anyway the guy tells me his sister has this old Gibson from the 20's that some #Hungariain women gave her. I showed him some pictures of an F4 I had handy in my desk, and he said "yeah thats it but it has" and with his fingers he draws out f holes on the top.
Needless to say what I started thinking. His sister lives out of state but I told him to call her(like now) and get the sn# and model off the label inside because she might have something that Dan B will have to report on.
