HAs anyone ever seen a mandolin that was orginally lacquered but the owner had it removed and in stead varnished? What is the cost of that process... is it even worth it?

    skippy,

I know someone that did it to a Randy Woods mandolin..... I believe the $$$ was roughly 1200-1500 bucks!

Just depends on what you want and how much you want it.

Well JD, looking at the mandolin in person there might be no contest, but just seeing them posted here I can't really say that the varnished instrument looks better (I don't necessarily think sunbursts are preferable though).
Of course what matters is what do you like better and what sounds better to your ear.
BTW skippy, refinishing an instrument, especially a nice instrument is not a do it yourself job for most people. JD built the mandolin pictured above so the fact that he was able to pull it off does not mean everyone can.
