For the majority, I am sure you are very familiar with this colaboration between Grisman and Rice.

Everyone else, this CD was given to me as a gift from a friend who knows I love instruments and old time music. This CD contains several cuts and each using pairs of ancient instruments. The cd comes with a brochure discribing each guitar and mandolin combination used. You are sure to love this set.

The name of the CD is Tone Poems with Tony Rice and David Grisman, Accoustic Disc label, 1994.

TP is so cool. And as a mandolinist, so many of those melodies are easily played. I dig Dawg After Dark meself

Yep, that's still one of my favorite CDs. It kind of changed the way I think of playing with others, hearing Tony Rice playing so relaxed and tasteful. It sounds to me that they left the flash at home and just concentrated on the music.

HOw does tone poems two compare with the first. Sometimes sequals don't match the originals.

    Thanks,

Chuck, I have many CD's that cover all genres but this is my all time favorite CD from start to finish.

I think it's the rythm playing I like the most. I have certainly heard the mandolin play rythm however, I think this CD displays exactly what rythm can sound like on the mandolin. Of course, TR is amazing.

TP 2 is mostly jazz standards. They both are a must, imo. I've been listening to TP 1 a lot lately - sublime playing and great tunes. I've also been working through the TP songbook - Watson Blues, O Solo Mio and planning to tackle Morning Sun and Swing 42 next. My only regret is I bought TP1 used w/out the booklet. I'm planning on ordering a new copy to support Dawg and get the liner notes! Happy listening.

    Thanks for the feedback.

If I were to try to explain how I think music should be approached, this has to be one of the best ways to give a new musican the concept. Very subtle and yet powerfully performed. The idea of melody and impovisation, over speed. I loved the Clarence White inspired, I am a Pilgim track. I was playing along last night with fiddle, mandloin and guitar. Which one to play first. By the way, my Eastman MD 504 sounds remarkably like the Gibson A4 on the Waltz track. I also have to praise the "burst" D-18 GE that I picked up used, wow!!!

    Best to all,

    Chuck

CAS - I have the one published by Hal Leonard w/ transcriptions by John Carlini, I believe. Sure makes for easier learning compared to the days of painstakingly slowing down the lp's. Highly recommended.

Apparently many of you are unaware that there is also TP3 - Dawg joined by Mike Auldridge and Bob Brozeman for some resophonic action.

I was just about to add TP3 to the discussion......but jeffleaster beat me to it. I really like TP1 with Tony Rice, I've learned many of David's solos with the help of the book......they are challenging, sound easier than they really are, but you are walking in the fingerprints of a Master.
So there are lessons beyond the tunes, just seeing where he is playing out of different positions etc.....great lessons there. TP2 with Martin Taylor is a close 2nd for my tastes, and I've learned a few from the book for TP2, but I need to get back into it & learn more. On TP 3 the resophonic Tone Poems..... Grisman plays obscure mando banjos & mando dobros, for some reason I play this CD the least, maybe I can't relate to the tone of these hybrid mandobeasts.

Yeah, TP3 just doesn't 'resonate' as much with me either.

I like Dawg's comment in concert where he described TP as an album where he and Tony "Took a bunch of vintage instruments and made them all sound just the same." # # # #

This is an interesting and instructive comment to everyone who has MAS. Whatever you trade into, you will sound very similar.
