I am wanting to make a snakehead shape for the headstock on my IV kit. Can I just use wooden dowels from the hardware store, or should I make/buy some maple plugs to fill in the existing peg holes?
Thanks,
Bill

Bill,
I have used common dowel rods before succesfully but if you can get maple dowels it might be better. I guess if you end up drilling through the plugged area, it might be better to not hit a soft spot with the drill bit.

Most of the dowel rods I have seen have been hardwood dowels, but most dowel stock is not truely round and you might want to cut some plugs with a plug cutter.
Since the holes are stepped you will need to drill them out first whether you use hardware store dowels or cut plugs.

Jim and Bill,
Thanks a bunch. I think I will try both of your suggestions and learn.
