I've been gazing sort of sideways at bandolims, and I'm aware of the small-shop luthiers who are building them.

But for half the price, there are the Giannini ones, and they seem nice enough, but I wonder where the parallel comparisons might be made to American-style mandolins...?

Do the top ones have solid back and sides? Are the Gianninis comparable to what production instruments? ... say...

    M. Kelly? Eastman?

If any of you have played them, I'd like to hear about your experiences.

    Many thanks,

    stv

I believe they have a solid wood and a laminated version. Giannini is one of the largest guitar shops in Brazil, and they have a large line, from cheap and sturdy to expensive. I doubt it would compare to anything currently made in the US, except maybe Mid Misouri, but the bracing system is different.

I've had Giannini guitars but not bandolins. I'm considering the idea of buying a cheap bandolim when i go to Brazil (maybe in July), instead of taking one of my mandolins.
    Mandolins:
    Mid-mo M11 (#1855)
    Ovation MM68 (#490231)
    New flute CD:
    Wellsprings 2: Joyful!
