One of my wife's clients stopped by the other night. Got to talking. Turns out she's got a long history of involvement in bluegrass music. And...she's a photographer.

    Hello!

I hinted, and this came in the mail today. Nice, huh?

    nice indeed.
two fiddles (high/low?), great tone, good composition, and a story clearly being told.

Great picture, Kind of a gray scale / chromatic quality.
Have to wonder how someone could be so involved in a conversation that they could not stop and soak in the two fiddlers playing off each other. Wonder what they are playing? Looks like the back lot at a studio.

I was working at the disney studios one day when one of the animal handlers came by with a baby bear. I was so excited seeing him, I got to play with him for a few minutes. I sure wish someone had a camera that day.

potential mando content - isn't that David Bromburg on the right, ('cause he can play the mandolin)? No doubt he learned alot from Vassar, God rest his soul.

Wayne is right, it's Darol Anger. #Picture was taken at Telluride, she didn't say what year.

From the looks, I'd guess 1979 or so.

What a moment! Thanks for sharing this, Mark.

I'll offer some almost-mando content: on Mike Auldridge's first album there's a beautiful tune called Tennessee Traveler. Vassar does a terrific fiddle solo, then comes back in with another break where I'm sure he's playing the fiddle like a fretless mandolin: no bowing, all pizzicato. Did he do the same on any other recordings?

(I should add that on the same tune, the late lamented Bobby Thompson does one of the most splendid banjo solos of all time.) -- Paul
He joyously felt himself idling, an unreflective mood in which water was water, sky was sky, breeze was breeze. He knew it couldn't last. -- Thomas McGuane, "Nothing but Blue Skies"

Look, I know they're great musicians and all, but that chick looks pretty hot. #I might ignore them, too. #Thank you.

For some reason my first thought when I saw the photo was, "Telluride". Maybe it was the mountain girl background.

I recorded with Vassar on a banjo player's project and he did just that on Nashville Blues for a full break, he even chopped the fiddle like a mandolin.
