Guys, this may sound stupid but I am going to ask anyhow. I am just learning and I have a copy of the Two Finger Mandolin Chords. They look upside down to me. I am familiar with the sounds because I am a guitar player. I chord with my left and pick with my right. Am I considered a righty or a lefty?? Also for E A D G, is the E the top strings on the mandolin and G the bottom strings?

    Thanks,

    Rick

You're a righty. Smallest strings at bottom E. Biggest at top is G.

    Mandolin-fifths. Guitar-fourths.
I think the right way you want to phrase it is:
The Guitar is upside down, not the mandy.

...and to piggy back that, i think that the "low end" (G) is refered to as the bottom, and the "high (treble) end" (E) is the top, contrary to the orientation of the ground. somebody tell me if i am wrong.

Thanks guys. I was a little confused. When ever we speak about guitar the first string is always the bottom. I was getting a little confused with the mandolin. I am going to take her to a music shop though to get her set up properly and probably a new set of strings. What about strings? Any particular size for a mandolin? I use medium on my guitar and it is perfect.

    Thanks again,

    Rick

Yep, I am taking guitar lessons and it messes with my head. He mentions the 1st string and I fret at the top E string where our G string is.

As far as strings go, D'Addario J74s (phosphor bronze, medium guage) are the "Standard", probably used by more players here than any other.
