Here's a Supertone I just got. #I don't know if the "310" inside on the label is a serial or model number. #It's nicely constructed and somewhat upscale compared to most Supertones. #Those are pearl dots and rectangles around the edge of the top and it has Brazilian sides and back

Man, Darryl... are you going to start the Flatback Journal. You are finding some nice little unassuming mandolins lately.

As to ID: I may sound like a broken record but it certainly points to Chicago manufacture esp since it was distributed by Sears.

The closest image I could come up with was in a 1930-31 Continental Music catalog. Yours looks like an upgraded wood and ornamentation version of this model 2226. Once again, probably Regal.

Thanks for the effort Jim. Does the Continental Cat refer to that Mod 2226 as a Supertone.

Yes, I have a thing lately for low $$ affordable, decently constructed flatbacks.

I think that Supertone was a Sears brand only. No doubt it was made for Sears but the page that the one above is one is only entitled Flatback Mandolins.

Quite possible, Paul. Any clues that would indicate that?

Other similar mandolins I have seen that actually said Harmony on them. Pickguard and headstock shape, gearshafts above, etc. Supertone was *usually* made for Sears by Harmony, though we all know things in Chicago were fluid. Most of Harmony's old pre-Schmidt production was mass-market unremarkable, but they always seemed to have some zingers coming along. I'd consider this one of those, thanks at least to the morse code marquetry. Is the backstrip really off-center?

    Here's another one, different headstock:

The piece from Elderly, Paul, does it have the back plate serving as a heel cap, Spanish style? I find that construction a bit quirky on American flat mandolins and might provide at least a bit of clue.

From the link I included above:

This to me is pure Harmony. However, lapping the back over the heel of the neck would be a production step from a fancier model, but not something I would consider evidence of another maker. Harmony pulled out all the stops for their fancier instruments. But even on those, they'd get backstrips off to one side, non-centered inlays down the board, etc.

Yes Paul, the backstripe is off-center. #Not quite as much as in the first pic but definately off-center. #I noticed that early on too. #I guess our eyes went to different schools together

Bernunzio has one that is almost identical, but the back is done differently (still off-center too)

Nice grain match in the two halves of the back too.
