I'd been hearing the Cherryholmes band for a while on bluegrassradio.com and now sirius but I just got their CD and it's really good. The crazy thing is they all started playing about 5 years ago! Check 'em out if you get the chance, they're a good group.

I second that endorsement. They are very well rehearsed and their music selection covers a lot of bases on that album. I'm impresed both by their motivation and dedication.

They are definitely an awesome bluegrass band. I wasn't the bit least surprised when they won the IBMA entertainers of the year. Great musicians, instruments and vocal! In the next 5-10 years ou will see those kids doing some great stuff in bluegrass.

You really need to go and see them in person to appreciate just what fine performers they are. Not only is their music incredibly good, their stage presence is absolutely exciting. No longer is it a dead stage with a bunch of music.

"They are going to be at Darrington in 2006"...

    Great news...

Their stage choreography is just unbelievable...

The "pack" will be doing a tune on one mic, and then suddenly the two fiddlers who have been circling the pack like a couple of sheep dogs will sneak in and do a twin fiddle solo, one conveniently left-handed and one right-handed...

Probably one of the most entertaining bands I've ever seen in any genre...

I noticed the precision of their physical arrangements and shifts on the Woodsongs video. They have practiced a time or two!

I've gotten to see them several times that last couple years - they never fail to impress and entertain. One of my favorite groups to see live. And they get better each time I see them - Cia especially has grown a lot as a singer just in the past year.

I've read that the mom, Sandy, diagrams all their stage movements, kind of like they were football plays. Seeing how quickly and precisely they carry out the choreography I can believe it.

I read an article in a bluegrass mag that I subscribe to, and they did a feature on the family and Jere ,(the father). Their story is pretty remarkable, especially when you learn that he came from the Bario, (sp) in California.

They are scheduled to be at "SuperGrass," Bakersfield, California, which will happen Feb. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 2006. Check the California Bluegrass Association website for more information.

Two fiddles. It's hard to find one good fiddler, let alone end up with two in your family band.

Not only do they circle and come in for a landing right at the mic right at the first note of the twin fiddle break, but they do the break with the "3 Ts".

I have not seem them live, but they get a great sound from the CD. They play with an energy not often found in the studio. All the solos are innovative and are played with power. I think you can feel the Ricky Skaggs influence. I project that their singing will get even stronger as their voices mature. Great album.

Thanks for the Woodsongs heads up. I watched it from the website and then it was on our community radio this weekend. Very impressive for the short time they have been playing as a band. Were nominated for Emerging Artist at IBMA, lost that one but won Entertainers of the Year. Seems like they either shoulda just got Emerging Artist or won both awards.

I just listened to a story about them on NPR's Weekend Edition. Great family story - you can check it out at the NPR website.

I heard that too. Not bad, but they barely mentioned the twin fiddles. To me that's the most unlikely thing, and one of the best aspects of their family band.

My wife and I saw Cherryholmes last night in LaGrange, GA. Words cannot adequately describe the feeling you get when you finally see and hear these folks in person. The first impression I got was that they really "attack" their instruments, regardless of the terrific sound system they were working with. There is no holding back or timidity with any of this group, they really bear down. Not only are there twin fiddles, but twin guitars as well; these youngsters are simply amazing instrumentalists. Mom was no slouch on mandolin, either.
I think the term for close family harmony is "blood harmony"; they have it. I can't repeat all of the nominations they have received for their efforts, but they have been linked with the very cream of the crop in bluegrass music. My wife is not real big on bluegrass, I guess because I don't represent it well enough, but she was more than impressed with what she witnessed last night from Cherryholmes! We also were treated to Paul Williams, J.D. Crowe, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver; a night to remember!

What's amazing to me is that ALL of the family members are GREAT musicians, especially for only STARTING 5 years ago. A good case for family genetics, I think. You hear about families who have one or two great musicians, but usually not all the family members. I heard dad Cherryholmes on the NPR Radio broadcast this morning (Saturday) and he said that he MADE the kids practice, not just if they wanted to. They are probably thanking him now....

I read an interview with Jere, never having heard the band, and he sounded like a scarey guy. Maybe it was just this artical, but he sounded like a complete control freak.
While I can't agree with his philosophy of child rearing, I heard the band on the Oprey this week and was extremely impressed with the performance.

Twin fiddles is one thing but Molly plays a left handed. That's wild to see two fiddles lean into the same mike and no need for collision avoidance measures. I think Jere's got a refreshing attitude. To paraphrase: 80% of life is not fun. It's damb hard work. IMHO Sugar coating life, is the reason why people have mental breakdowns when the pop machine goes empty.
Lord forgive me for i have veered off.

"While I can't agree with his philosophy of child rearing..."

If you have the time, talk to the kids after a show some time. Mature, polite, intelligent... which is the exception these days rather than the rule for kids that age. Whatever he's doing, it sure seems to work.

By the way, they started Molly out learning right handed on fiddle, and she sort of floundered and lost interest after a while. Then they broke down and let her play leftie like she wanted to, and she really sunk her teeth into it.
