I had an old "Gilch" once...at least that's what it said on the scratched-up headstock--was kind of beat up, but it sure did sound nice. Maybe the "ghilcrest" you are wondering about is actually a "Gilch"--just a guess.

I went to a Matt Flinner seminar last weekend and saw him play what I believe was a Gilchrist for about two hours. #Yep, it was a very good one, black electrical tape and all

He played a duet with Ezra Bussman that was pretty incredible. #Ezra was playing his Old Wave F5 that his dad made. #Believe it or not that Gilchrist almost held it's own

I've only heard one. I didn't like it. It was real loud and the high notes rang like a bell. And it smelt of vegamite.

Don't confuse a Ghilcrest with a Gilchrist. While the Gilchrist is widely thought of as a very good mandolin, the Ghilcrest is very rare........& usually only offered for sale on Ebay by Indonesians...

These same sellers generally have the "Ultra Rare" 9 string model..........

I think we should begin building a mandolin, made in America, specifically for export to the Asian market. We could have three models; the A called "The Seriously" in script on the headstock, the F4 called "The Western Union" likewise inscribed, and finally, at the top of the line, "The Pepekk", F5 model made from hand selected 4x8 sheets of aged 3/4" Home Depot plywood with an inlaid poodle on the headstock. Our line would be sold exclusively on EBay and customer service would be our watchword...as long as the cash equivalent hit our Swiss bank account before we get in the truck to go get the plywood. Any backers? I'm gonna need a lot of cash to get this baby off the ground.

Seriously, to answer blugrassboy's question directly. Some would say Gilchrists are the best in the world. Some would say second. Some would say third, but generally everyone agrees probably one of the top five builders today. I prefer American made but hey! to each according to their needs, from each according to their abilities.

I think I'd like to play one for a while. Then I'd be in a position to speak. I haven't heard much negativity about them, aside from the cost, and the attendant sour grapes gripes.

Yes, Yes, we will service the various whims of the mando collecting elite. Mother of Squirrel will only be available on the Pepekk model of course. We might be able to get a signature Tom T. Hall Road Kill version for Big Joe if the lawyers can agree. Elen can you help here? We'll even offer a Distressed Pepekk Model to compete with those Gibson folks. (We'll throw it in the back of the truck for a while). I'm thinking of making a mando out of fish cheeks to target the Indonesian market. We'll call it the Gelchrist. To compete with that Monteleone fella, we'll build an aluminum mando with a built in radio. You can play yer own tunes or somebody elses. It'll have a lot of weird angles and if I can get Hans to sign a design contract we'll call it the Bentup model. Man I gots all kinda ideas.

I think I have seen one of those you described above. It's a MK special edition. They make 1 every 5 years, by hand - really nice tone.
