Hey, I have the Charlie Byrd Live in New Orleans DVD, and he plays Jobim's "Wave". Although I have not done a real complete search as of yet, does anyone here have info on how to play this tune on Mando? Thanks, dy.

Sorry, no, but Dave Peters nailed it on mando.

It's a real straight forward tune to play. I learned it from the Real Book, and then I got a bossa play along to jam on it. I'm at work now, but when I get home, I can post the changes. It lays real nicely on mando. And Alan, Dave smoked that one, no doubt!
I laid the tracks, never rode the train.

It's one of my favourite tunes, and one of the first i learned on mandolin. I later learned a nice chordal arrangement from Don Stiernberg, which he learned from Jethro Burns.

Here the first version I could find. Anyone know where there is a better version?

Usually done in D instead of C. The tonality is a little weird, sounds like major sometimes like minor some other times.

The version from the fake book that BradW posted is the one I play. I love playing the little scale in the second measure of the melody. It lies so nicely on the mandolin.

It's a great tune that I never tire of playing.

That melody is correct, as far as i can remember Tom (Jobim) singing it. This is one of those songs that is best sung when drunk especially to hit those low bluesy notes in the second part. Bigtime favourite in Brazil, not just mine.

Funny, I've always heard it as an instrumental. I was told that Frank Sinatra did a version but it's hard for me to imagine.

The following seems to be a good source for chords -
the melody is the usually the easier part to
    pick out.

If you search for "Wave" as a song title on Amazon.com
you'll find lots of Jazz versions of it in brief sound files.
Often parts of solos are included. This is a good way to
hear different settings for tunes. --Joel

I don't know any words in English for this one, only the Portuguese ones. Astrud Gilberto didn't do it, as far as i know. The name is in English. I've always assumed that it has to do with "Bossa Nova" being more or less translatable as "New Wave". But the words have nothing to do with it (they're about "things the eye can't see but the heart understands"). I'm thinking Tom probably composed it as an instrumental and added words later.

Quick "googling" found an English version which i've never heard. Sinatra's maybe? And here are the words in Portuguese.
