    Hi,

My mandolin could really use a partial re-fret, possibly a new nut and general setup. The good folks at Mandolin Brothers are busy for the next 3-4 months (!) and other places (like Bucks County Folk Music) seem backed up as well. I guess the weather is changing and instruments starting to crack or develop problems.

So my question is - who in the NJ/NYC area can handle such a job (competently!) on short notice? I live in central NJ (Keyport) Ideally I would like to be be without my mando for no more than a week. Am I being unrealistic?

    Thanks,
    Avi

    slightly,
I live in Southern NJ and between here and NYC, (including philly) instrument repair is scarce.
I have yet to find a builder in NJ.
Red sunburst into bleach white outer edges anyone?.... eh eh?

Bob Jones in Brooklyn. I know people who use him and I believe he does all the work on a friend's '42 Gibson. I do not have a way of getting in touch but a little research you can find him.

Thanks. Any experience with repair work at Lark Street Music? I think they can accomodate my schedule.

Highly recommend (they have worked on my instruments for years:
Bob Jones: 718-965-6786 (he is not too cool on email)
    Steve Uhrik (also in Brooklyn): 718 237 6092 sales@retrofret.com

Also, Tom Crandall at Matt Umanov's: 212-675-2157

I have not had any repairs done at Lark Street but Buzz knows what he is doing.

You might try Michael Terris at Menzel Violins in Livingston NJ. He's a builder and does mostly repairs these days. They have a website (menzelviolins.com).

I can vouch for the work that Bob Jones does ... he's about the only guy I completely trust my instruments to ...

I knew I could count on you guys! I now have several options to work with. And while my mando is in the shop I'll have to play my tenor banjo...hmmm...would be nice to have a backup mando, wouldn't it? I can almost justify one...wait...yup...I think I just did

    Cheers,
