Can any of you bowlback experts identify this mandolin for me? It seems to have irises inlaid up the neck. Pretty. Lots of crazing in the finish, and a few tiny cracks in the fretboard, and a bit of fret wear, but the neck is straight, the action is excellent, the volume is loud, the tone is rich and sweet, there are no cracks that I can find in the top or back. Definitely one of the good ones. No label. Inside of bowl is lined entirely with what looks like tar-covered muslin. (How can it have such a lively tone with that stuff in there?) I would guess that this is an upper end Washburn or Lyon & Healy, but maybe someone can tell me a lot more. Thanks very much for your help.

Closeup of inlay. Not a superb job, but this is a pretty big blowup, and I've accentuated the contrast. I didn't notice the fill around the inlay until I blew it up.

Oops, sorry. I've been really busy of late. This isn't exactly like any Lyon & Healy (L&H) with which I am familiar. The profile looks rather L&H-like as do some of the inlays (although they could be bought in bulk and often crossed manufacturers). The widish pearl rosette and borders are pretty common to L&H models, especially their mid-level American Conservatory brand. The headstock profile is also identical to L&H's entry-level model that was labeled simply "Lyon & Healy." I don't think L&H ordinarily used that backplate though. If I had to guess (and it would only be a guess) I would guess this was built by L&H or assembled of largely L&H-supplied parts for somebody's house brand. Any labels at all?

Thanks. No labels at all. But it's a player with no issues and a wonderful tone, and that's a good thing.

Indeed! What kind of music are you playing with it?
