I don't have a copy of Monroe playing this tune (strange as that may seem). I have recordings by Tony Rice and Mark O'Connor - these boys are zipping along above 125 bpm. Is that the normal speed for this tune?

Listen to Ray Legere get this one. A nice lope, nothing more.
Thanks for the reply! I'll try to track that one down. I have to admit that I don't know that name. Interestingly I found a celtic version of the tune on the Cafe's MP3 page - not the way I would play it but it works well with the whistsle and the bodhran. Of course they're zipping along a a pretty good clip, too.
I've been testing the tune out in my studio and can play it at 100bpm but that's about my top end. I believe a "lope" would be a bit slower. I'm gonna try it out.

The one on TablEdit is set at 120 bpm for Monroe and 125 bpm for Baker version.

That's my favorite Monroe instrumental, and I don't ever expect to reach his speed -- or virtuosity for that matter. My attitude is, play as fast as you can play it cleanly.
Thanks folks! I can't tell you why I didn't think of the Alltabs site - that's why I hang out around here. I picked this tune up by ear and didn't bother checking out the site. The answers are there - so I guess the bottom line is I need to do some more woodshedding! And yes, it's one of my faves, too. Thanks again!
