Did anyone catch the Andy Statman episode on Bravo!'s "The Jazz Sessions" on Aug. 9?
Does anyone know of a way to get a copy of this??
Also, I think Andy played some festivals this summer. Any comments on those performances? I've been out of the country for two years now and I am going through Andy withdrawal. He is definitely the most captivating and inspiring mandolin player I have seen live.

Andy put on a wonderful show at rockygrass. He starts out with the clarinet and then moves on to a lot of improvisational stuff with the mandolin. I hung out with him for a bit and was lucky to be with him while jamming with Bela Fleck. He is a very nice guy, very dedicated to his music and religion, and was pleasantly down to earth. His kind of music is the kind I love most, driven by the soul and nothing else.

It's very good to hear that he's getting TV and doing big festivals.

Does he still play that old Gibson A model? And when's that new mandolin album coming out? I'm desperate to hear it.

I have only ever seen him play that old Gibson snakehead. I tried to attach a great picture of him playing it from the Bravo! site but the file was too large. You can check it out here

I also can't wait for the new album. I will be in New York next month and I hope I can see him play in the West Village and pick up a copy there.

That's a great picture of an insiring picker. Does Andy still play at the synagogue in NYC regularly? I really would like to see that Bravo show.

    Jamie,
I believe that Andy still plays there every Monday and Thursday night whenever he is not out touring or observing a Jewish holiday.
His website has the phone number of the synagogue and you can call ahead and check to see if he will be there.

He plays a 1918 Gibson A2z. I played it for a while and it is a good mandolin, very clear for an oval hole. He actually got it from a barbershop. He is also still playing regularly at the synagogue and didn't really give much more info on the new album other than "soon to be released".

    Hey Goose,
Let me know if you get to see him. I will in NYC from the 9th through the 19th and I am hoping to catch him too. By the way, don't forget to stop by the Wednesday night bluegrass jam at the Baggot Inn on west 3rd.
Also, I will ask the forum again, did anyone catch the Andy Statman episode on Bravo!'s "The Jazz Sessions"?

Are you sure that this show was on Bravo and not a different channel? #I've looked at the Bravo web site and schedules, and I haven't seen any program by that name.

Excuse me while I google "jazz sessions Andy Statman" and see what comes up.

    ....well that explains it: Bravo!Canada

I don't know if is owned by the same parent company as plain old (American) Bravo, but it sure isn't the same channel! Much much classier. #And not a single airing of Queer Eye, Being Booby Brown, Celebrity Poker, Battle of the Network Reality Stars and other 'quality" junk programming. No overlap at all, so they must be two totally separate business entities.

Oooh, John Abercrombie on September 13th. Maybe he'll play some electric mandolin (he does), but unlikely I suppose.

I believe he played a couple of tunes off his new album at Rockygrass. One was a very beautiful waltz if my memory is correct. The new album will have Andy plus his bass player and drummer--the same guys who played with him at Rockygrass. As Chris said, Andy played straight from the heart. It was fun to see him enjoying a Fat Tire between tunes too.

Boy, I guess I haven't seen Andy in a long time. I probably look a lot older too. When did he grow the beard and cut his hair?
