Ladies and Gents, I finally took the plung and ordered an A5 Neil Dean mandolin. He is one of the up and coming mandolin builders in US and an absolute joy to talk with.
This is my 1st order from a small builder but I wanted to share my excitement with the cafe. Many good things have been said about Neil and I can attest to all of them being true. Now I just have to figure out what to do for a year or so.

Congrats! I know you're not going to regret working with an independent. You are going to have an instrument that sounds like no one else's. Give us some of the particulars, please. How long is the wait?

Yes, congrats! Please post progress reports and pictures as you have them. The process is half the fun.

That is part of the reason I decided to go with a small builder. I wanted to feel like I had instrument that was my own. The wait is about 14mths. I was talking with Neil and he mentioned he really has not hit his stride yet. He was building at Rigel and just finished working there due to orders he was getting for his mandolins. He bases his A models off of the Gil A3 I think. It will come with a compound radius fretboard. I just wanted his standard model. I asked for a 1 piece back only because I like the look of them. I will post photos as well as any info I recieve from Neil as I get it. 14 mths. is a long time but I am certain it will be soooo swweet when I get it.

14 months! Man, some of you guys are way more patient than I am. I'm going on my 3rd mandolin, in 3 weeks of playing!

    Yikes!
