Is there some magic way to tell what type of tuners are on a mandolin by looking at them?? My 1998 Flatiron F-5 Special has pearly looking buttons and the metal is all gold plated. Very fancy engraving on the metal strips where the gears are(on the back of the headstock).

Are they Waverly, Gotoh, Grover, Bargain Basement???

These are on the Custom (or upgraded) F-5 I've talked about here before. ("THE FLATIRON" engraved Gold Tailpiece and "THE FLATIRON" MOP script inlay on the headstock.)

Any idea what they are. What was Gibson putting on their High End Flatirons / Upgraded F-5Gs in 1998

    Hey JDARTGOD-

I'd guess the tuners on your 98 Flatiron are Schallers.

    See here:http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners/M...in_Tuners.html

I'm seeing you over on the Martin Guitar Forum. Don't you have a D-18GE?

    I'll check the Stewmac site.

YOU BETCHA I got a D-18GE. SUPER SWEET (1935 Sunburst). It's a 2002 model, but I just bought it (NEW) in August of last year. The Southeastern Martin Factory Rep hand picked it from a huge litter at the Factory because it stood out and he wanted his buddy to have it in his shop. (Tommy Allen of West Mobile Music in Mobile, Alabama)

Tommy had a great price listed on the internet, so I called him from Pensacola and he said "I'm in a good mood, I'll let you have it for $X,XXX. I said HOLD THAT BABY and took off that Friday to get it. With the upgrades (Sunburst Top, etc..) it listed @ $4,000. I got it pretty close to half of that!! And OH MY were the sharks circling when I got there. Local Mobilians heard it was on hold and were there waiting, hoping I would not show up so they could get it!!

Best sounding (and OLDEST sounding) new guitar I ever touched. Unbelievable tone and volume.

So...it sounds as if you like this D-18GE

I've had a chance to play a few but I seem to have a problem with the V shaped neck. Maybe I've just been playing the low profile neck too long. I've been G.A.S.ing for an HD-28V but it's the V neck thing again. What I need is an HD-28V with a low profile neck.

On the other hand, I already have an HD-28 that I really like so there may not be a need to G.A.S. for a V.

Going to take you Flatiron over to Sim?
