I have two abalone shells that my uncle and I pulled from the bottom of the ocean back in the late 60's. I have carried these around as momentos all of these years, but as I get older I am divesting myself of these material things. Is there potential for these shells as inlays or is it not economical to process them into something useful?

It takes a big shell and special tools to get much usable material, but somebody muight be interested.

Check this one out. A friend brought it back from Mexico where it was sold as a decoration. It appears to be lacquered.
I've been told to leave it alone.

Good ol' Al I know A guy that takes abalone shells and patches beautiful inlay patterns on all kinds of instruments. He said it actually was'nt to much work to do. (Of course he has a natural hand for it)

It's also an unhealthy proposition to process ab shell without the proper tools, working it under water, etc. etc....

I once met someone who cut a lot of shell who told the story of waking up one morning with the entire right side of his body completely numb...
    Or was it the left??
