there is just enough left in my gift certificate to buy a used cd. two blues possibilities.
    1. keb mo- no mando that i know of, but that doesn't mean i can't listen/play some of the tunes. i forget the name, but it won a wc handy in 95 for country blues- keb with his head down holding a guitar against a barn???
    2. jw- i think its "second winter" the back has a pic of johnny holding a mando and it has "too much seconol" which as i recall has some mando on it. not sure if other tracks do???

    so, blues fans- whaddayathink???

I got the Keb Mo cd a while back (the one that won the WC Handy). I didn't care for it overmuch. Didn't dislike it, exactly, it just never really hit me. Johnny Winters--I've listened to several of his albums and usually liked them.
If you get a chance, check out Amos Lee. My sister loaned me his cd; I really liked it. No mando to speak of, though.
You can't have everything--and if you did, where would you put it?

Keb Mo He is the BEST. I have the first two of his and love them very much. The third one just didn't grab me when I heard cuts of it on the radio.

Keb Mo's first 2 CD's are stellar IMHO
Another younger acoustic blues artist I like is Alvin Youngblood Hart.
Taj Mahal playes on some of his Cd's and there "is" mandolin.

I can't stand Keb Mo. I've only heard one of his CDs ("Just Like Me"), and I find him a poseur. At least Taj Mahal studied Mississippi John Hurt; Keb studied Taj Mahal, and so is removed from any root source. He wears a derby and plays a National; his blues creds are merely fashion.

Skip the middleman: listen to Mississippi John Hurt and Reverand Gary Davis for Piedmont-style pickin. Listen to the amazin' and blazin' Blind Blake for ragtime. Listen to Robert Johnson for The Real Deal. Keb Mo CDs make excellent coasters.

    One man's opinion.

Try "Still alive and Well" by Johnny Winter. It has a cut called "Too much Seconal" with very nice acoustic mandolin on it. Teh rest of the disc is great, too.

    Ira,
I have to put my vote in for anything by Guy Davis. Great folky, country and classic blues.

The track on Second Winter is "I'm Not Sure"

For a discography of rock and blues mando tracks & albums go to the databases at Yahoo Groups: RockMando. Not much traffic, but I'm primarily using it to park discography data for semi-public viewing and adding of more tracks/albums etc.

Just to muddy the waters a bit, do you have "Blue Country Heart" by Jorma Kaukonen? Great old-time acoustic blues disc with some very tasty mando playing.

I enjoy both artists (Mo & Winter), but comparing them seems a case of apples & oranges. I listened to a lot of Winter when younger -- especially when I was learing to play electric slide guitar -- and I can see that he could be considered an acquired taste, while Mo is a bit more melodic and "accessible".

BTW, I am pretty sure I heard a resonator mandolin on Mo's Keep it Simple CD, but I don't remember which track.

Another good choice -- which of the good Doctor's CD's did you purchase?

Just make sure you have those great Yank Rachel CDs. Blues mando at it's best.

If we're going to muddy the waters....

    Speaking of Muddy Waters.....

There's some mando and other oldtime acoustic instruments on this one. Check out "Rosalie". Sounds a lot like "Milk Cow Blues". I'd be interested to know if one was a take off on the other. Similar time frame for both, I think (early 40s). Anyway, some cool old acoustic blues.
