i don't know if this is in the right forum. if it is, sorry.

i just got my first mandolin the other day. it has a movable bridge and it isn't horizontal. should i just use the thumb screws and move the high end down? i heard the bridge should be placed slightly higher on the G-string side than the E-string side, is this true?

    thanks to anyone who responds

There are probably more astute comments to come, but my bridge is a bit higher on the G side than the E side, too. The lower pitched strings vibrate more up and down, so they need more room to move without buzzing on the fingerboard. (Correct me if I'm wrong, folks.)
If you measure the clearance at the 12th fret, the G string should be about 1 or 2/64" higher than the E. You need a pretty precise ruler for that measurement, though.
Now, let the real experts tackle this one.

I'd measure how high the strings are above the fretboard. You never know when they were fitting the bridge, maybe they got one side too low and to compensate you now have the saddle on that side screwed high. Does this make sense?

If you have buzzing problems on the lower pitched strings, here is a great tutorial on buzz diagnostics at frets.com.
