I was out in DC last week and Picked this up. Quite the new toy! Fir Top, Hard Maple back (1 piece), and sides, 1 3/16 nut (nice stout neck), flat fingerboard.

    You can definitely hear it!

Hope you enjoy some of these pictures.

    That's (from left to right) 2001 Smith Creek F-5 #37, 1780 something Benjamin Banks violin, 1924 Gibson A-Jr, 2005 Rose F-5 #30, 1953 D-28, 1958 D-28, 1950 something Kay Bass. Newcomer fits right in don't you think?

Well Leo it looks awesome, how about a sound review? How does it compare to your Smith Creek?

Dave - It's different than the Smith Creek. I wouldn't say better. The SC has a little "woodier" tone but that is likely because it's older and has been played a lot. The Rose is new. The Rose is a little louder and the trebles are definitely crisper. It really creates a percussive chop; I mean this mandolin is pahrful! Also the Rose is easier for me to play - which is saying something because the SC was the easiest playing mandolin I have ever played. The SC has a 1 3/32 nut and the Rose has a 1 3/16 nut. I do prefer the stout neck and I believe it makes the instrument sound better. I think it was the one thing that LL slightly missed was the stout neck (being an engineer myself I can say that ) . He should have left it more like the F-4 neck but with the longer scale. I played guitar for years and still do, so am used to a bigger neck. The Martin dreadnought guitars of the 30's had big stout necks and I am certain it makes them sound the way they do (the huge thundering sound). Anyway the neck works really well for me.

The Rose is great right now - I have never, and I do mean never, played a new mandolin that has this much tone, power and response. Loud, clear, balanced, percussive, responsive, and plays itself (just add human).

I think in 3 - 6 months this mandolin will be twice what it is now and that is hard to imagine!

I am computer challenged (as you can probably tell by these pics). How do you do a sound clip?

How did you figure out how to post a picture. I have tried reducing my file size to 59K. What am I doing wrong??

    Hey Leo
Did the Rose belong to Orrin Starr (s?)I know he lives in the DC area, and i think he ordered two Rose mandos.

I ordered it last December (a present from my ever understanding sweetheart who can't understand why I need more instruments). My basement is getting full!

Darby didn't have one with the 1 3/16 nut and I really didn't want the fingerboard extension - at all.

Gets better by the day. Playing along with the "High Lonesome Sound" album this morning.

Money paid for good instruments isn't spent - it's parked.
