Question about strings...

Is it a bad idea to use light strings for G and D and medium strings for A and E. What differences would there be in the sound? Would doing that do any damage to the Mandolin?

Probably not; the GHS Bobby Osborne signature set is like that.

I'm no expert, but I can't see why it would damage the mando. The sound difference is probably just what you'd expect: more sustain on the high strings, more twang on the low strings.
