    Tiple. No M.

I thought tiples were usually double-strung?

I think this is the Shirley Timple model.

Nope, timple, not tiple. The timple is a 5 string instrument from the Canary islands, not to be confused with the various types of Tiples.

Many many variant instruments called "tiple": Wikipedia article.

The US instrument called "tiple" is a 10-string, four courses strung 2/3/3/2. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th courses are octave strung -- the 2nd and 3rd triple-strung courses have two high octave and one low octave string, the 4th course has one high and one low octave.

According to the Wikipedia article, some of the Cuban tiple variants have as few as three strings.

Had one just like it but gave it away - can't remember the name of the luthier who made it. Nice ... plucky ... uke-sounding ... charangos are so much better.

Yes, timple is the correct name for the Canary Islands uke variant. And it has 5 strings. The common tuning is GCEAD.

I have one of those somewhere around here.... needs strings. Got it as a souvenir when I lived on Tenerife, in 1980 or so. Not a very great one, though. (And yes, they spelled it timple.)
