tailpiece screw came out

I have a wonderful old bowlback mando that I string with Dogels (Italian strings made for bowlbacks). It has been a dependable player for many years. Last night I took it out of the case and the tailpiece screw farthest away from the top had come out and the tailpiece was leaning against the top. I loosened the strings, put the tailpiece back in place and then tried to put the screw back in, but it easly went in and out of it's old hole without turning it. The wood there is rosewood. Should I just get a bigger screw? Or should I stuff some toothpicks and glue in the old hole and then make a new one? Or is there a better fix? The old screw is so tiny that I am surprised it held all these years. I estimate this instrument to be at least 80 years old.
