Left hand finger position

I've received conflicting advice as to where my fingers should be in relation to the frets. What do others recommend and why?

In my experience, I get the cleanest sound when the center of the tip of my finger is just behind the desired fret. The forward side of my finger tip is usually on top of the fret, even extending past just a bit. I find that with the tip of the finger just behind the fret, I can get the cleanest sound with the least force.
