Default New Poe Scout Build: Redwood over Cocobolo

Andy Poe is building a custom Poe Scout for me with a Redwood top and Cocobolo back and sides.

Components will include Rubner tuners, a one-piece bridge, and a Nugget tailpiece. It will be strung with Thomastik Mittels and have a spirit varnish finish.

    Getting close now!

That instrument is proof that point and curlicues are not necessary for a beautiful instrument.

I'm not sure if the redwood compliments the cocobolo or vice versa, but whichever way it is, it works. Very, very nice.

I really like redwood as a tonewood. I have it paired with maple on both my 10 string mandola and 10 string mandocello.

That cocobolo back looks mighty fine, Don. And the TI's are an interesting thought. I've been wondering what strings to try next given Andy's instructions to install a set with gauges of .010 / .014 / .024 / .034.

Peter Bagale at Northfield Mandolins came through with the Nugget Tailpiece that I think was made for an instrument like this!

I don't know that I've ever seen an unfinished instrument look so finished. There's just so much color and visual interest to the redwood top and cocobolo back. I can't wait to see it varnished!

Curious about the Cocobolo tone? How is it different than the standard Maple?... It is certainly beautiful!

I expect it to sound like all the other Poe Scouts despite the wood differences. I'm looking forward to finding out soon!
