Looking for a slow jam in Pittsburgh. If one doesn't exist, I'd like to create one. Any recommendations?

You can try the Starlite jam in Blawnox.... It's not a "slow jam", but they are friendly and welcoming.

If you take a Calliope House course, you'll meet some new people and make connections. Classes held at Chatham U. in Oakland.

Pittsburgh Mandolin Orchestra welcomes players of all skill levels.

Old Time jam at Hambone's in Lawrenceville....all abilities welcome, but it's more "session-style" than a jam.

    Hope that helps!

Bluegrass jam at the Starlight Lounge in Blawnox (near 'NStuff Music if you're familiar with that)

Old Time jam at Hambones in Lawrenceville

Calliope is a great resource if you are looking for group lessons or to add an instrument to your arsenal. Hope that helps!

Jstring...you beat me to it. Looks like we pretty much agree! The Old Time jam at Hambones occasionally has a "slow jam" for beginners on the first Sunday of the month prior to the "regular" jam.

Thanks guys. I live in Fox Chapel. Very close to Starlite. I know some of the pickers that regularly attend and my skills aren't quite on the same level. If they are truly friendly and welcoming, then I'd be willing to give it a shot. As far as Pgh Mando Orchestra, I used to get lessons from Charley Rappaport and was extended an invite to join. However, my schedule didn't allow for holiday concerts etc... I know I should be going to Starlite regularly.

A Fox Chapel picker! Wish you'd been around when I still lived there. I grew up in O'Hara Township and went to FCAHS. I have been to the Starlite a few times since I moved away, and it is a better jam than it was when I lived there. Definitely make yourself a regular. If we cross paths, I hope you'll introduce yourself. I visit a couple times a year.
