Thread: Thoughts on this Weber A style Bitterroot please.

Default Thoughts on this Weber A style Bitterroot please.

First time posting and getting ready to purchase my first mandolin. I had been doing a bunch of research and trying to find a good quality used piece to get started. Long story short, I now have an opportunity to purchase a 2008 Weber A style Bitterroot. I'm wondering if this is a custom Weber, as I can't find any pictures on the Googles that look like this one? Also, assuming this is in excellent condition, what kind of value should be placed on this? Thanks for any considerations.

    Brad,
That would have been a custom order from either a person or music store. The black top makes it a custom. I would say around $1,500 would be a fair price, but that depends on the condition.

Thanks George! This wouldn't be my first choice in color or style but I was already looking at a Breedlove Premier FF for around $900 when this popped up. I thought $1000 was a steal for this Weber.

While I understand what you mean -I'm not a big fan of black tops-, this will probably grow on you pretty quickly. Go for it ... I would!

If it is $1000, you better already have it in your hands, because a bunch of other guys are attempting to track it down and snipe it at this very moment!

I have a 2005 Weber Bitteroot-A and absolutely love it. I would never sell mine for less than $1400 or $1500, assuming I wanted to sell it at all. I don't care for the black top on that one, but at $1000 it's a steal. I will say that the Brekke bridge won't allow that mandolin to sound it's best. I had mine changed to a Cumberland Acoustics bridge, and the tone/volume is significantly better.

There are many good players that play A5 style mandolins. Tim O'Brien is a pretty fair player and he happens to paly an A blacktop mandolin. It has been discussed at great length and it seems that there is little to no difference in sound between an A5 and F5 mandolin. The two most important factors of any mandolin is sound and playability. If you like both that would be a good deal and keep you happy for a long time.

Thanks for the kind responses guys! I'm a complete noob here, but I also know if I pick up a mando that I don't enjoy, I won't pursue it, so I'm really stoked to be able to practice on such a fine instrument. I'll post some more pics tomorrow when I pick it up. Cheers!
