Thread: Hello Everybody!

    Default Hello Everybody!

Hey everybody! My name is Jesse and I'm excited to finally join this site. I've used it during my past year of teaching myself mandolin and I've finally made account. It's difficult finding people who play mandolin or know a bit about them so I'm really glad I had these forums and various tutorial videos on youtube to help me continue to learn songs and scales etc.
So instead of just making this a generic introduction, I'd like to ask what is everyone's favorite mandolin that they personally own and what is your favorite scale/mode to just play around in

Since I'm a newbie, I have a rogue a style (nothing special I know) and my favorite mode to play around in is D Dorian!

Hi, Jesse! I'm a rankled amateur, too, a long-time guit-picker who's new to mando. Mine is a Mid-Missouri (Now called Big Muddy) flattop. Don't have a favorite mode.

Even though I'm new here, I'll say it first: Welcome!

That you are playing around with different modes is commendable. Right now I'm learning all the major scales in the first position. I do like melodic minor scales, but am trying to be disciplined with the process. I'm devoting the first 15 minutes to practicing exercises from the Mandolins Heal the World site.

My best mandolin is my Silverangel A. But, because I keep it out on my desk, playing my Michael Kelly more as it is in reach at all times. It's a testament to how really decent it is.

Just love that D dorian, G and D pentatonics getting a lot of attention these days as well!

Started with a dodgy import bowl back and then at my better half's urging, got a flatiron A some 25 years ago, it's been good ever since. Both that mando and my better half turned out to be keepers

    Thanks everyone!
Unfortunately I'm not in the Scottish highlands, but I am a sucker for Scottish and Celtic music, as well as puns
I live right in the Appalachian part of Ohio, which is another reason why I'm suprised I don't personally know many mandolin players, or even fiddle or banjo. I too like pentatonics on the mandolin and the fifths tuning has won me over! I actually put strings on my cheap uke so I could have it tuned in fifths, however I decided to leave the G string as re-entrant so I could keep that unique sound that the uke has.

Welcome Jesse. My favorite is usually whichever I'm playing at the time. Currently, that would be an Eastman 415.

I'm a sucker for dorian, and mixolydian reels and jigs sourced from thesession.org. I spend a lot of time over there sifting through tunes and versions of tunes. I have downloaded too many to learn but I keep finding more.

Mandolin - my first stringer is a Weber Vintage F. But my TheLoar 220 still sees action.
