Default Just signed up for the new John Reischman class at Peghead Nation

    Its Swell!

John is one of three of my favorite mandolin players-and he sits in seat #1.
I absolutely love the sound he gets from his playing style and until now, I've had to catch a glimpse in videos of how he plays. No more.

The classes are excellent with the videography, presentation, and PFD downloads. I'm looking forward to his different offerings, as I really enjoy waltz style mandolin played solo.

This is going to be so good.

Its 4am and I just finished the first two lessons(1 on his pick holding/playing style and 2 on fretting with the left hand-some new things there for me to learn). I like being able to log in at any time and get a refresh on a class or watch something new.

Already have a tune of his I want to suggest he offers up for us to learn.

Oh yea, Café users get the first month free-check out the notice on the home page here.

I took a day long workshop with him and loved his teaching style, cold he was suffering from notwithstanding.

I just started working on The North Shore, such a gorgeous song!

Get Reischman's book of "Up in the Woods" if you don't have it yet. It will give you some good insight into John's playing.

    Don
thanks so much for this info-I just ordered a copy-I have that CD and there are a couple songs that are very appealing to me(put them on replay for hours while at home doing things). I did not know this was available.

Never checked out peghead nation before, this thread got me to watch all their mando promo vids.

John Reischman sure has a sweet tone, got me to dig through my pick collection to see if I could match it, my JazzMando pro-plec 1.5 came closest if I used a light touch. So I am going to use that pic for a while now for fun. :-)

I loved those tunes he played too, they might be a wee bit beyond me though, so debating whether to give it a go.

Also out of curiosity, I verified that Sharon Gilchrist is not related to the mandolin maker of the same name, although there are videos of her playing a Gilchrist. :-)
Davey Stuart tenor guitar (based on his 18" mandola design).

Eastwood 4 string electric mandostang, 2x Airline e-mandola (4-string) one strung as an e-OM.
DSP's: Helix HX Stomp, various Zooms.
    Amps: THR-10, Sony XB-20.

Well..... Ms Gilchrist plays a Gil or two and so does Joe K. Walsh ..... both are fine teachers. I look forward to getting into J.R.'s lessons in the near future. It so boggles my mind at the level of quality and availability of lesson material around now days. It certainly gives a new player a jump start. R/

I went to a workshop with Reischman (really enjoyed his calm, quiet somewhat wry manner) and he really stresses volume along with tone - make both strings sound, loud and clean.

1875-ish Hungarian fiddle ("Uncle Bill") that I can play about half a tune on. Some day.....

Still room to sign up at Montana Fiddle Camp for almost a week with John and some other great instructors/players. Well worth it.

Thank you for your review! I'm going to try that 'first month free deal'.

I've got a bunch of old fiddle tunes that I can play, but it's just muscle memory and tablature memorization. I'm after the real knowledge - the knowledge of what I'm really doing, how to improvise in key, how to transpose keys, chords, chord progressions, etc.

It may be a bit early to ask as you're new to it, and I'm guessing you may already know a lot of the stuff I'm after, but in your opinion do you think it addresses those sorts of things in a reasonably well thought out way that'd be helpful to a newb like me?

I'm down to Peghead or Bradley Laird!

    Thanks for any help :-)

    God bless,

    Voodoo South

I signed up for John's Peghead Nation lessons too. I'm mesmerized by that Loar and his playing. So fun to watch and learn.

I signed up for Beginning Mandolin with Sharon Gilchrist and John Reischman's class. I've been playing for a couple years now and thought it would be good to start from fresh again -Sharon's class has been great. And I've enjoyed JR's class on one of his songs (La Arbodela).

Can anyone help out with the name of the G minor waltz John plays at the end of the preview clip, starting at 4:14? I know I've got it on an album somewhere, but I can't seem to find it. Thanks!

Found it. It's The North Shore, which I know from Tone Poets. Really nice tune.

The North Shore, is also on Johns CD, "Up in the Woods" and is played in a slow smooth tune. Don't know how that compares to the one you mentioned.

info and music/tabs included on "The North Shore" are in the recent released songbook of that album:

I really like "Ponies in the Forest, Indiana Firefly" on that album and book also.

Pretty quick to pick up from the video being able to see John's hands as well, at least for the one pass through.
