Default upcoming instrument auction via ebay

I noticed tonight on ebay that there are listings for instruments that will be auctioned on Feb 25th that include a number of mandolins and tenor guitars, among other fretted instruments, the 271 lots/items being the musical instrument collection of Lawrence David Clark ESQ. of NY offered by Bruneau and Co., auctioneers of Cranston, Rhode Island. NFI, but a few interesting and tempting items.

Just a caveat: If you are planning on bidding do realize that the Buyer's premium is 25% applied to the winning bid. That is pretty hefty IMHO. Fine if you are still getting a bargain. That means $500 bid becomes $625 (plus tax and shipping). For a $1000 bid you will pay an additional $250. So figure that into your bids.

They really have the dates wrong on some of this stuff. A 70's Strad-O-Lin and a 20's Gibson A style on the second page and I didn't even look at a whole lot of the other stuff.

This looks more like an old line music store than a collection. There's some nice little gems hidden in there beyond the Gibson mandolins.

I've never heard of a Conn "Naked Lady" alto sax, but I did inherit a Reynolds "Official Music Man" tenor sax from my uncle. It was used in the movie and engraved on the bell. Unfortunately, I'm not a sax player.

I'm a sax player and used to pick up the old Conn saxes at pawn shops. The engraving on the bell usually just had a lady's face and a hint of cleavage but occasionally you'd find one with more elaborate engraving of the lady.

They know what they have for sure. Of the Gibson A models, they the '24 A Jr with no strings or bridge has the highest starting bid.

I'd imagine that the auction house (Bruneau & Co. Auctioneers) does their due diligence to research auction sales records on same or similar items.

Dating on some of the Gibsons could be more precise.

I put in a few conservative max bids, but fell short. Everything I was looking at went for $1100-$1400. Some people got a good deal; others got mandos that need work (back separation, cracked or missing binding, missing bridge, etc) so not that much of a "deal" per se, but a good project.

I'd rather just buy outright for (and from) a known quantity. Like the Cafe

I wasn't worwwed by any of the sales from a sellers standpoint... thought that the hammer prices with additional fees put everything at least in the "going" value market....
Now if you wanted a good deal on a harmonica... this was your auction !

Yeah, that was pretty much market price for just about all of the Gibsons.

The whiteface A3 went the highest if I'm not mistaken: $1500, + $375 for the premium. Your average guitar shop would have a hard time selling it for much more than that.

That's been my experience with auctions I've attended, in general. Even, obscure isolated 'farm auctions". If it says "Gibson, Martin, or Fender" there will always be somebody in the rafters bidding against you!

I looked and passed. These collector auctions generally go higher because hey, if a collector collected the collector instruments, they gotta be collectable right?

Any goombah can be mistaken for a collector if he or she has enough instruments.

All you need is one other person per auction who is crazier or has deeper pockets than you to drive the price up.
