It really sounds good. I was told that it was the sample for the gold top at the NAMM show. The set up is great. Plays easily and is very responsive. It doesn't sound like a ninety year old Gibson, but it sounds awesome for a sub 1K mandolin. Not really a dark bassy tone. More midrange with plenty of volume. It's difficult to describe tone, but it was the sound that got my attention before I saw the top.

I suspect the tiny metallic flakes within the gold metallic finish will resonate within certain frequency ranges (given orientation and exact dimensions of each metallic flake, of course), providing a bright "boost" in those ranges.
I think the Eastman looks incredible. From the photos, it looks like it does justice to the look of the original:
