...and now I own another cd.
These guys are gaining popularity very quickly here. The mandolin player, Josh Carter does a lot of work at the Boys and Girls Club in Brevard teaching music to the kids. Cool bunch of young folks that give you hope for the future.
I admire their lack of a guitar in the band. They have a nice groove going on.
One thing I couldn't help but notice in the first video is that the fiddle has "something" that I can't identify between the tailpiece and bridge, and it looks like there's more of it all the way up to the fingerboard. I tried pausing the video at different points to get a better look at it, but that didn't work. What is that?
at 0:55 I think it's a feather. Rattlesnake rattles too risky, i guess.
Kentucky km900
Yamaha piano, clarinet, violin; generic cello;
a pedal steel (highly recommended); banjo, dobro don't get played much cause i'm considerate ;}
Shopping/monitoring prices: vibraphone/marimbas, rhodes, synths, Yamaha brass and double reeds
That's just the jack for his pickup/mic. I've seen a few place it there, as it's one of the few places that's out of the way for a fiddler. Wires will run up to the neck/body connection, then many will run it back under the body of the fiddle to the chinrest, and flip it over their shoulder right up by their own neck so the wire is behind them.
Anyway, I like their sound and vibe. I have to admit, I'm starting to get a chuckle out of the plaid/beard/hat combo I see in every promo pack I get. A friendly presenter/promoter I know emailed me last week saying he would no longer consider signing and band whose member has a man bun.
Ah, good eye! Now that you say that, a feather is exactly what it looks like, with the quill end stuck through the bridge. I wonder if it's mere decoration, or serves some mystical or acoustic purpose?
If I am not mistaken that mandolin is a Big Muddy M-11.
I love the Big Muddy and its sound. Perfect for that type of music.
...
Just watched this. You guys aren't kidding. Great band and nice mando!
Spoke with Josh a couple days ago and he was indeed playing a Big Muddy in that video. He is now playing a beautiful A style made by a guy here in Asheville. It has a cedar top and pre-wormy chestnut back and sides. Will try and get some pics posted here, very unique instrument.
