    Default Iwamoto Acoustic World Mandolins

Has any one owned or ever played an Iwamoto Acoustic World mandolin? I'm heading up to Elderly Instruments next month to purchase a new (Or Used) mandolin. I'm open to an A or F style. Elderly's website shows 3 or 4 of Takeshi Iwamoto's mandolins. They look very nice, especially his T model 3 point jazz model. I was wondering what input anyone could share with me on his mandolins.
    Thanks

There's a guy around here with one, played it once, weighed a ton, and was not my can of tuna. He loves it, for me, meh.

FWIW, that's an Acoustic World electric in my avatar. I've not played any of his acoustics, but that electric is the best one I've ever played, and I've played lots of electrics. Iwamoto was commissioned to build a mandolin-scale '59 Les Paul, and this thing really does feel like a Paul alright, and the pickup is strong and clear. When I auditioned it (in Tokyo), I fed the signal straight into a mixer and into headphones, to hear the true nature of the instrument (and not the amp). Would've just sat in that store and played it for hours if I hadn't had to leave for an appointment.

So, at any rate, I can attest to the superb quality of at least one of his instruments, if that helps any.

Isn't "Acoustic World electric" an oxymoron? Like jumbo shrimp?

You're probably right in your assessment. Seems like all the heavier mandolins I've played are pretty blah sounding. But the lighter ones have more going on tone wise. Maybe it's because the tops have been graduated better?

I've never played an electric mandolin. Solid body or an acoustic with a pickup installed. I'm afraid I'd wander off from Bill Monroe into Chuck Berry land. Which isn't to far off if you think about it. They both made a living off of cool double stop licks.
