    Default Pickup and Feedback issues

    Hi Everyone,
I'm new to the forum and I was wondering if you could help.

I use a Myers Gooseneck Mini mic into a LR Baggs Acoustic Pre-Amp into a Fishman Loudbox 60W. I'll have the gain about 1/3 of the way up on the pre amp and once I start increasing the volume on the amp past 2 I get feedback. I've adjusted the positioning of the pickup, turned Phantom Power on and off, tried turning the gain down and the volume up and I seem to lose volume every time. Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

    Welcome to the Cafe.

Why are you using the Baggs? A mic should not need a preamp, the PA already has one. The reason to use the Baggs is to match impedance to a transducer, then match to the PA. The mic is already a match and having more gain is just asking for feedback. Try it without the Baggs, it should work much better. In this case the PA is your Fishman and you want to be in the mic input.

    It is an omnidirectional microphone.

You should not be using the preamp. You are double gain-staging it and the input impedance is completely wrong as well.

This is not a "pickup" at all (despite the seriously misleading description). It is a microphone and needs to be treated as such. It is also non-directional and has a low feedback threshold.

Try going straight into your amp, for starters. That will remove some of the problems.

In addition to the above comments, with microphones the position relative to the speaker is important. Try not to have it pointed directly at you.

Yes. Monitors in front of you? have you considered in-ear monitors instead?

Doesn't the Myers have a preamp already?

Do yourself a favor and spend $30 on a DBX GoRack. Auto feedback reduction.

I agree with pops1. Get rid of the preamp. Also, you might want to rethink your setup anyway. Those types of instrument mounted mics are notorious feedback howlers when used on a stage in front of monitor speakers. I suggest using a passive pickup like the K&K Mandolin Twin or something similar. You'll have much more control of your sound on stage.

There is a vast difference in feedback susceptibility between the Myers (poor) and 'the best of the rest': ATM350 and DPA 4099 (both of which are excellent at rejecting off-axis noise). You can get very good levels with both of these.
