    Default Tonal qualities of Paduak

In another thread Paduak was described as "soft sounding". In my investigation of Paduak what I read was that Paduak most sounded like Walnut in tonal characteristics. I did not hear it described as "soft sounding", but maybe warm. I am curious as to the observations of people here at the Cafe about Paduak. Thank you in advance.

i think good paduk makes a guitar that would be similar to high quality walnut. near to a rose wood tone but a bit more treble. perfect for jumbo or bigger finger style guitars. i find the rosewoods tend to get a bit muddy on big body guitars. wamnut or paduk are a nice alternative. some don't like the reddish to pink colour but i am not fixated on traditional guitar colours.

a couple of the best hand made guitars i have heard had paduk back and sides.

With a little sunlight the paduak will turn a nice brown.

    Barry,
I am curious if your Paduak Uke's (nice alliteration) soft tone is due to the Paduak or other factors in the Uke, like construction, top wood, or the like?

Padauk does not sound like walnut at all, to my ear... it sounds very similar to East Indian rosewood IMHO, or wenge.
Check out this mandolin I made with it, there's a sound sample, too.

    Marty,
That is a lovely looking and sounding mandolin. Thank you for sharing. I really love the smooth tone that has. I am excited to be joining the paduak club.

well a tenor uke is quieter than a soprano usually and my soprano was a plywood cheapo. I picked it up in the store, liked the smooth tone and the little pits in the wood all over just looked so rustic. I like it a lot, don't get me wrong. it isn't thin sounding like the epiphone les paul uke I tried. but playing it acoustic only I'd have to sing quieter to balance levels

I hear lacquering the inside of the back, , logically , makes the reflected sound less 'soft'..

I have a Bourgeois D guitar with Padauk back and sides, Adirondack top...fantastic sounding instrument. I find the Padauk to be warm like rosewood but with a bit more treble leaning toward mahogany, probably right down the middle btw those two woods.
