This software looks intriguing. The FAQs mention upcoming support for other fretted instruments. Presumably mandolin will be included in the not too distant future. I've sent an inquiry to find out.

"Well, I don't know much about bands but I do know you can't make a living selling big trombones, no sir. Mandolin picks, perhaps..."
That is intriguing! Keep us posted!
On that note, I'm surprised there isn't an app for mandolins out there.

There used to be MandoModeExplorer but it seems to have disappeared.

There's also Chord! which does a similar job (and is available on Android as well) and supports most fretted instruments, including mandolin:

There's a free version I think but the full one is only £3.49
From the developer:
"actually the software supports 6 strings guitar and a couple of 5 strings basses but internally it is already programmed to support other instruments. Gradually we will release them with next updates. In general no problem with the string number o certain instrument types, but with some tunings we have to test and do some additional work: e.g. some one tunings are very useful for chords but not useful with scales…
Next months we will release the majority of other "guitar-like tuned” instruments: ukulele, etc etc…"
