    Default Wintergrass 2017

Bought my tickets for Wintergrass a while back, but the intensive lessons weren't posted yet. Was just there and signed up the both the Mike Marshall, and the Caterina Lichtenberg intensive lessons.

Just letting you know that there is only 1 space left in the Mike Marshall workshop if you're interested...

    Hope to see you there.

Anyone looking to share room costs? I promise not to smoke, drink too much or pass gas.

Well, I suppose it's best not to risk being square, so I'll be there too.

anyone planning on being in Seattle any afternoon/evenings? Totally forgot about this festival in the tour madness. I'm back in Seattle for a couple weeks. I'd enjoy putting faces to names and suchlike.

Saw a very nice Austin Clark F model. And a mandola from Andrew Mowry.

Andrew Mowry had a bigleaf mandola that was a real eye-catcher and sounded strong. Austin Clark's GOMs were spectacular. Greg Boyd had an interesting-looking "Blues Machine" mandolin that was, well, a blues machine.

I had the privilege of hearing John Reischman play four of my vintage instruments, which was no small delight. I thought the best-sounding mandolin at the vintage tasting, aside from John's Loar, was a D'Angelico 2-point that someone brought.

The 2-point D'Angelico was a really gorgeous mando too!

Wow, what a weekend. As David said above ~ over way too soon!

So many highlights I don't even know where to begin. The intensive lessons with Caterina Litchenberg and Mike Marshall were amazing. Wonderful teachers and gave me a few things to work towards (get better at sight reading music amongst other things). Talking to Dave and and trying out Mandobart's citterns at the Mike Marshall intensive were real treats.

The Wintergrass Youth Academy was outstanding again this year. My oldest son, Tai, was a YATT (Youth Academy Teacher in Training) this year and had a different focus than previous years. It really is an incredible program that they have created for the kids.

The shows were wonderful and enjoyed Mr. Sun, Sierra Hull, Hot Buttered Rum amongst others. The vintage instrument showcase that the Fretboard Journal put on was fun to geek out at. John Reischman played a handful of beauties that made it difficult to pick a favourite, but I did enjoy the Gibson A4, Lyon & Healy, and the Bacon. I liked that oval holes were well represented as I tend to lean that way. mrmando ~ which mandolins were yours? They all sounded wonderful in their own ways, but you still heard John Reischman

There was so much great music packed in that it's a little overwhelming. 3 out of 4 in our family agreed that we enjoyed the Mike Marshall & Caternina Litchenberg concert the most, while my youngest son gave that honour to Sierra Hull.

Austin Clark had a table full of goodness and it was good to catch up with him again. Both his F5s were outstanding and whoever gets them will be very pleased! I didn't get a chance to try out any of Andrew Mowry's instruments, but they sure looked nice.

Last year Tai won a scholarship from Wintergrass to Mike Marshall's online lessons at Artistworks.com Tai came in at the end of the Intensive Lesson to meet Mike and he invited Tai up on stage for a couple of tunes. Hope you enjoy.
