Northfield makes a fine instrument. You may never want for a better one. It certainly is of a quality to grow with you as a musician and instrumentalist. Many stores and private sellers offer a two day trial period. If that is the case play it and have someone play it so you can hear it from the front. Luck R/
    I love hanging out with mandolin nerds . . . . . Thanks peeps ...

I don't know what the price you are paying but I played 2 of these at the Gryphon Stringed Instrument store and they were very nice for the price which was under $3K. The Northfield that I REALLY liked was the blond big Mon they had for $4500. I liked it better than another one there that was $9K by a different maker!! You can figure that out by going to their web site...

    I think you'll be happy!

From the OP - ".. it's way too far to test it..... ". How far is ''too far'' ?. I've made three 520 mile round trips to buy my mandolins. If you can do it,it really is the best way. It's not just the tone of the mandolin,it's the way it ''feels in your hand & under your fingers''. But good luck on your purchase, the Northfields' have a terrific reputation,

I've played on three Northfield and if my bank account was better disposed I'd have bought any one of them. Would love to hear how it turned out for you.

I got my F5S a few months ago and could not be happier. It was my first mandolin after playing guitar exclusively for many years. It's a really great instrument and I fall more in love with it every time I pick it up.
